Indie Distribution: Getting Heard in a Wireless World
(Moderator: David De Cristofaro) What was once a simple equation – label signs band and hires distributors to deliver the product to stores – is now exponentially more complicated. Independent artists may sidestep labels entirely, leaving them with the decision of whether to sign directly with distributors and / or do their own marketing. With a primarily digital delivery system, music can be sent to mobile devices, cars or home systems. So, can distributors survive as mere deliverers of content? This session will examine marketing and other variable points of differentiation between distributors and explore issues such as what makes a distributor more suitable for what kind of artist?
