Allen Kovac Keynote Interview: ‘Don’t Drink the Major Labels’ Kool-Aid’

As a promoter of bands like The Talking Heads Elvis Costello and Tom Petty in the Pacific NW, Allen Kovac had a vision for what the music business could be. He started 10th Street Entertainment, his artist management company in Los Angeles, to be able to maximize the careers of clients like The Cranberries, Mötley Crüe, Blondie En Vogue, and Duran Duran, among others. Kovac paired with advertising agency, DDB Needham and Strategic Research in the mid-90s to work on Media Buying and Consumer Research for the music business, planting the seed for his data-driven future work.

The founder of the indie leading rock label, Better Noise Music, Kovac made waves last fall when he received an AIM Visionary Award in London. and After an introduction for Kovac’s early vision of today’s streaming business and by Richard Branson, Kovac tore into the myth of major label exceptionalism. “We develop artists. Majors manufacture them,” said Kovac. His message: Indies don’t need to compete on the charts or follow any other part of the majors’ script. In a Keynote Interview, we’ll talk to this indie disruptor about artist development, future projects, and his vision for the music businesses’s future.
