Panel Discussion

Electronic with Ñ: Redefining the Sound of Electronic Music in Latin America & Spain.

In 2017, Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi’s Despacito became the first primarily-Spanish-language song to top the Billboard Hot 100 since The Macarena in 1996 (feel old now?). Analysts says the earworm was part of a “build” that had been going on in for a couple of years. Enrique Iglesias, Nicky Jam, J Balvin and Maluma fueled an expansion of the music that had receded since the days of Ricky Martin and Marc Anthony. Streaming has pushed Latin music to a quarter-billion-dollar-a-year industry in this decade. The market has widened to include Europe, and the artists hail from previously untapped countries – like Venezuela’s Danny Ocean and Colombia’s Karol G. Non-Latin artists are even looking to expand their following with collaborations. This panel will track the boom and estimate how far Latin music can go in a globalized 21st Century environment.
