Shakira

Girls of Grime,
Founder Shakira Walters, is from East London the home of Grime, began
the platform in 2017 in an attempt to leverage the gap between support for
female artists vs their male counterparts. An avid meditator and yogi, she
recognised the under-representation of female creatives and those behind
the scenes in the growing UK music industry and wanted to make a
change. Deciding this year that a career change was necessary, Shakira
quit her job in Fashion and is now an A&R for a major label and is also
making steps to becoming an Artist Manager.
GIRLSofGRIME has organically grown into a channel/community
advocating and actively creating opportunities for women in the UK music
scene, particularly within the genres of Grime & Rap. Working tirelessly to
raise the profile of females artists, DJ's and producers. We A &R talent;
organise radio sets; manage live showcase events; arrange artist bookings;
assist with the creative production of photoshoots/music videos and
mentor women/young people. We produce regular radio shows with Rinse
FM and have also made appearances on Kiss FM & BBC 1xtra. In addition to
this, last year we put on a live showcase at Wireless Festival as part of
Smirnoff's 'Equalising Music' stage, hosted by Beats1's Julie Adenuga.
Some of the talent we've worked closely with include Lioness, The Grime
Violinist, C Cane and Keedz.
T he GIRLSofGRIME strap line reads "It's Not Just Music, It's Our Culture"
as we recognise the power of music on wider society and really enjoy
exploring it. O ur latest event took place on International Women's Day
2019, where we organised an all female line-up for our artist panel
discussion, live cypher and afterparty . We feel really strongly about
sharing this type of insight. Therefore, we will be releasing the audio as
part of a podcast series with digital platform KEAKIE, followed by podcasts
recorded with artists/talent and industry experts.
