Aengus Finnan

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Aengus is a senior arts administrator, educator, community programmer, and artist.

He taught art and music in several northern communities including Moosonee, and the arctic community of Inuvik (in the Northwest Territories). He released three recordings and toured extensively throughout North America, Japan, and Australia before founding the Shelter Valley Folk Festival in 2003 where he served as Artistic Director until 2010.

Aengus served as Board President for Folk Music Ontario, was the co-founder of Canada's annual Gordon Lightfoot tribute concert series. He served as an Officer for the Ontario Arts Council before taking on the role of Executive Director of Folk Alliance International as of September 2014. Hallmarks of his tenure include the introduction of an Artist in Residence program, annual through-leader summits, galvanizing the International Folk Music Awards, and diversification of the Board, staff, and general program.

He is a visual arts graduate of Lester B. Pearson United World College and holds both a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre and Bachelor of Education degrees.

He was co-chair of the Kansas City Arts Industry Sector Council and has presented formally to The Recording Academy's Diversity and Inclusion Task Force and to UNESCO regarding the International Year of Indigenous Languages. He is a distinguished Alumni of Nipissing University, was twice nominated for the Premier's Award for Excellence in the Arts, and is a recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal for his cultural and humanitarian work.
