Cathy Allison

Cathy joined the CRTC in 2005, and was previously Manager, Enforcement in the Compliance and Enforcement sector. She has been involved in a variety of major regulatory files including the 2006 Commercial Radio Policy Review, Local Forbearance in the telecommunications market, and the Unsolicited Telecommunications Rules. She has also been responsible for providing outreach and developing partnerships with international regulatory agencies, law enforcement organizations and industry associations.

Prior to joining the CRTC, Cathy held various senior management positions in marketing and strategic planning at Bell Canada and Nortel Networks. She also established a consulting firm that provided strategic planning advice to corporations seeking to develop marketing and advertising strategies using new/digital media technologies. For nearly a decade she was Director of Research and Industry Analysis for emerging technologies at Gartner Group, a technology research firm.

Cathy holds degrees from the University of Toronto, the Royal Conservatory of Music and Carleton University in music, theatre, and communications, and is currently a Sessional Lecturer at Carleton where she teaches courses on communications theory and regulation, copyright issues, and the music industry. She is currently co-authoring a book on the evolution of stereophonic sound in the 1950s – the beginning of the Golden Age of the recording industry.

Over the years Cathy has served on the Boards of a number of organizations including the Ottawa International Jazz Festival, the Kiwanis Music Festival, Canadian Women in Communications and the International Association of Jazz Educators.
