NEW RULES: NEW MUSIC COMPANY
A KEYNOTE INTERVIEW WITH BMG CEO, HARTWIG MASUCH

Imagine this. A multi-billion dollar, major global music company completely exits the music industry. For 24 hours. And then they start again from scratch. With just three people working out of one office, they launch what eight years later becomes the biggest player in the industry outside the three majors. Sound unthinkable? Hartwig Masuch, the founder and CEO of BMG did just that.

Launched the same week as Spotify, BMG – still helmed by Masuch – employs 800 people spread across 15 offices in 12 countries – covering 80% of the worldwide music market.

In this one-on-one interview, Masuch will recount one of the boldest decisions in the history of the industry, how BMG emerged in the wake of the digital revolution, acquisitions and proactive deals with companies like Facebook and Netflix. As the only fully integrated music company, from recordings and publishing to books and documentaries, Masuch outlines BMG’s global mindset, artist-first approach, and what lies ahead for the future of the industry.

ABOUT HARTWIG MASUCH
Hartwig Masuch is the CEO and co-founder of BMG, the fastest growing music company of the 21st century. Key to BMG’s innovative approach is the fact it represents the traditionally separate music publishing and recording rights off the same state-of-the-art platform internationally.

After working as a freelance music producer, running his own independent music publishing company and working with Warner Music Publishing (Germany), Hartwig Masuch joined the former BMG Music Publishing as Managing Director & Senior Vice President GSA in 1991. He held the position until 2007 when the company was acquired by Universal Music Group. Subsequently, he advised Bertelsmann, BMG’s parent company, as a consultant during the sale of Bertelsmann’s 50 percent shareholding in Sony BMG Music Entertainment.

In October 2008, Hartwig Masuch was appointed CEO of the new BMG, steering the continuous growth story of the newly formed music rights management company which is now the fourth biggest music company in the world.

Since its launch BMG has established a presence in twelve core music markets and now represents the rights to more than 2.5 million songs and recordings, including the catalogues of Chrysalis, Bug, Virgin, Mute, Sanctuary, Primary Wave, Talpa Music and BBR.
