Announcing the CMW 2018 Allan Waters Young Broadcaster of the Year Award

Again, we had a record number of nominations and the job of determining a winner. With the breadth of young outstanding talent under the age of 30 in Canada, it becomes even more difficult each year. This year’s Allan Waters Young Broadcaster of the Year Award, in memoriam of the legendary Radio Programmer Steve Young, has been chosen and this year the honouree again comes from the west.

Ruby Carr of Newcap Vancouver, and a prominent member of Z-95’s “Ruby, Leslie and Scooter” morning show, is the chosen recipient. Ruby is a strong talent, who since moving to Vancouver from Halifax in April 2014, has made herself into an upstanding leader in the community. She supports countless local charities in her personal time like the Shoppers Drug Mart Run for Women in support of BC Women’s Hospital mental health initiatives, The Vancouver Night Race in support of Starlight Children’s Foundation, BCSPCA: Love is in the Air – A Red Carpet Affair, Climb the Wall 2017 in support of the BC Lung Association, a private fundraiser for Danielle Linfoot, the 2017 Growing Hearts and Minds Gala benefitting Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School for children with learning disabilities and more. Ruby is also always eager to share her broadcasting knowledge with younger members of our industry and is actively seeking opportunities to formalize her mentorship process.

Ruby Carr, who hails from Halifax, Nova Scotia, made a bold coast-to-coast move to Vancouver in April of 2014 to become the host of the Z95.3 Morning Show. Currently: Z Mornings with Ruby, Leslie & Scooter.  Ruby is a passionate performer and a captivating story-teller.  She has a killer instinct for content, and an unstoppable energy that she channels daily into listener events, video production, social media, and client meetings. She supports local charities, hosting events for the BCSPCA, the Kenneth Gordon Maplewood School, and more. On the air, shes a driver of our annual Christmas Wishes campaign which identifies families with unique needs in the community and helps them with these needs at such a sensitive time of year.  All that being said, Ruby feels her most impressive piece of work was her “Up Close and Personal” interview with Ed Sheeran because how many people can say they delicately caressed Ed Sheeran’s face with a microphone?
Ruby will be invited to participate in the Radio Interactive International activities at Canadian Music Week. She will be recognized during the Industry Award dinner on May 10th and presented her award at the Radio Talent session.
It was also very difficult to narrow down to the runners up this year with so much talent submitted.
Lauren Hunter of SONiC 102.9/Edmonton and Jax Irwin of KiSS 92.5 / Toronto were chosen as runner up’s this year. Congrats to Lauren and Jax and all the strong young talent under 30’s who were considered for the 10th annual Allan Waters Young Broadcaster of the Year Award, in memoriam of the legendary Radio Programmer Steve Young.
