Toronto and Austin are one step closer to becoming musical “twin cities.”

Austin council passed a resolution on Thursday to begin formally establishing a “Music City Alliance” with the City of Toronto aimed at encouraging music-related trade, tourism and general, cross-cultural exchange between the two towns.

A musical alliance with Texas’s capital city — which has successfully marketed itself to the rest of the planet as the “Live Music Capital of the World” for years — was first pitched to Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell and members of his council during a visit by representatives of Toronto’s music industry and local councillors Josh Colle and Gary Crawford to the South by Southwest festival this past March.
