SUPAFRIK

Chinedu Chinedu Ukabam aka Chi is the founder of SUPAFRIK, a Toronto collective at the forefront of contemporary African culture. They have produced food/ fashion /music/art events in Paris, London, New Orleans and DC. SUPAFRIK has been instrumental in pushing African music independently, providing management services for top Afrobeats DJs and collaborating with cultural institutions like the ROM, The New Museum (New York), Drake Hotel and the Harbourfront Centre. Chi is also the co-founder of the Gumbo music series along with Wan Luv. It is an art-infused dance party celebrating African and Caribbean culture through music, dance, video projections, photography and space design. Founded in Toronto in 2015, Gumbo has since gone on the road connecting the African diaspora from Montreal to New Orleans to Brooklyn where they collaborated with Afropunk. Musically centered in Afrobeats, their musical palette also draws from everything from Soca to Dancehall to Baille Funk and from to Afrohouse to New Orleans Bounce. Pulling from guest DJs like Boddhi Satva, Anais B and Nana Kwabena(Jidenna) they bring the raw energy and creativity of carnival culture into the Gumbo discotek. Through international collaborations with Everyday People (NYC) and Ancestral (Belgium), Gumbo keeps connecting the diaspora through music.
