The Rights Stuff: Kilometre Music Group Monetizes the ‘Canadian Invasion’

Moderator: Karen Bliss

Michael McCarty worked for music-rights for seven years as the chief membership officer at SOCAN. He and his partners, producer Gavin Brown (The Tragically Hip, Billy Talent) and SOCAN colleague Rodney Murphy, have since formed Kilometre Music Group, with the mission of taking the rights-fight directly to market. What they’ve seen is a majority of Canadian artists’ intellectual property owned by foreign companies, essentially a “brain drain” of intellectual property. In an exploding market for songs, and mega-deals for major artists’ catalogues, they want to repatriate the music, for everyone from major artists to “the kids making beats in their rooms.” In this session, McCarty, Murphy and Brown will tell you how.
