Interviewer: Shirley Halperin

Carianne Marshall knows indie success from the ground up. A champion of songwriters, she was one of three partners at the phenomenally successful L.A.-based SONGS Music Publishing, where she also ran the West Coast office and was the Head of Creative Services and Head of Creative Licensing. The company became a highly valued venture and was bought by Kobalt in December 2017.

Marshall went on to become Co-Chair and COO of Warner Chappell Music, where she was later joined by the publisherā€™s Co-Chair and CEO, Guy Moot. In 2019, the duo set out to reenergize Warner Chappellā€™s brand, culture and strategy ā€“ with a focus on getting songwritersā€™ heard ā€“ from their new global headquarters in downtown Los Angeles.

Since then, Marshall and Moot have ushered in a new era at Warner Chappell, from landing publishing deals with iconic songwriters like Lizzo, Quincy Jones, and the Grateful Dead to growing and strengthening the companyā€™s full spectrum of support services ā€“ including the launch of a new Creative Services department and royalties collection app.

Shirley Halperin, Executive Editor of Music at Variety Magazine, interviews Marshall about her career path and talks about the strategies for success at Warner Chappell.
