Keynote Interview

Steve Barnett: Major Labels, Major League

Steve Barnett didn’t get the memo that major labels should hurry up and die. In seven years as Chair of Columbia Records, the company’s market share spiked 50% on the strength of artists like Adele, Beyonce, John Mayer and One Direction. In a little more than three years since joining Capital Music Group as Chair/CEO, the likes of Sam Smith, Arcade Fire, Beck and Five Seconds of Summer lifted the label to #2, its highest ranking in decades. He even renovated the iconic Capitol Records Tower. As Katy Perry said of Barnett, “It's nice to have a head in there who knows what the f---k they’re doing.”
