Fireside Chat with Youtube’s Tuma Basa: Hip-Hop’s Top Digital Curator

It’s no coincidence that hip-hop’s ascendance into the world’s most-listened-to genre dovetailed with the streaming era. And behind the scenes, Tuma Basa has been one of the top influencers in breaking black artists digitally. YouTube’s director of Urban Music was hired last year after a stint at Spotify where he curated the influential, discovery-based hip-hop playlist RapCaviar, launching-pad of artists like Cardi B and Desiigner. Already a music giant in its own right, YouTube hired Tuma Basa for its new streaming service YouTube Music to help hip-hop/R&B artists and labels via its “direct-to-fan” platform. A veteran of BET, MTV and VP of music programming at Sean Combs’ Revolt TV, Basa has seen and heard the best and has the most influential ears in hip-hop.
