First Nations’ Best Sounds: Indigenous Music’s Message

Music can soothe, inflame and inform. And Canada has seen waves of its Indigenous population expressing itself musically, burning with stories, tragedy and even rebellious humour in the face of it all. From originators like Buffy Sainte Marie, Robbie Robertson and Edward Gamblin, to cutting-edge electronica pioneers like A Tribe Called Red, the rappers War Party and Juno-winning Inuk throat singer Tanya Taqaq, this country’s Native music scene has built on itself, dovetailing with a general awakening of awareness of residential schools, broken treaties and other previously buried history. This panel will examine the state of Canada’s Indigenous music scene and highlight the very best.
