How to Survive and Prosper as a Publisher in the Age of Streaming

Streaming is a boon for consumers but for publishers and the writers they represent, streaming rates, especially in Canada, are not replacing downloads and physical sales. What to do? Will you play the game and sign mainly “Spotifycore” writers (a.k.a. tunesmiths who know how to game the system and write for discovery algorithms)? Do you pass the losses down the food chain and pay less in terms of advances? Do you look outside the country and concentrate on the U.S. and Europe where streaming rates are higher? Or do you avoid this digital money-pit altogether and stick with writers with radio appeal, and synch rather than stream?
