What was your favourite show you’ve played so far?
1. Every Sofar Sounds Show I’ve ever played – especially Montreal. Self-described as “Gigs in intimate spaces around the world; Sofar Sounds is a global movement which brings the magic back to live music”, Sofar is legitimately the perfect live experience for any performer and listener. With an attentive audience that waitlists every month to try to get into nondescript venues featuring some of the most unique spaces in the world’s coolest metropolitan cities, they hand select artists to create a one-of-a-kind bill. My favourite Sofar performance had to have been in Montreal on October 18th, 2016. It was pure magic.
2. June 15th, 2017 “Giving Voice”, sponsored by The Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art and Christchurch Cathedral. Christchurch Cathedral was hands-down the most beautiful venue I’ve ever performed in.
3. June 18, 2015 Beyonce Tribute Night @ The Biltmore: This show was WILD. What musician wouldn’t love to re-create the sorcery of the Queen herself?!
What are you most looking forward to at CMW?
CMW is easily one of my favourite festivals to play. The energy of the city reaches an all-time high as the night-life fuels concert-goers and musicians alike to catch all sorts of shows. I love CMW for it’s ability to concentrate so many shows in such a small area: you can catch 5 different bands at 5 different venues over the course of 5 hours. It’s the kind of insanity that keeps you up until 4 at the morning, with an 8 am wake-up call so that you’re able to make it to the endless panels and one-on-one mentorship clinics. I’ve been lucky enough to experience a lot of opportunity derived from said showcases/panels/mentorship, so I have nothing but good things to say. However, let me offer you some words of advice: drink lots of water (like more water than you usually consume), try to eat at least two square meals (try Hogtown Vegan for some amazing replica eats or one of Momofuku’s eateries), take the time to experience everything Toronto has to offer (like Kensington Market, Queen West, and Trinity-Bellwoods Park to name a few) and get at least three hours of sleep… cause that’s totally normal…right?!
What is your favourite thing about your city?
Vancouver is endlessly beautiful. It’s almost redundant to talk about the oceans meeting the mountains, and how the sun wakes up the entire city. However – and perhaps a Vancouverite anomaly – I love the rain. I love how the city smells in the spring during downpour. I look forward to purchasing my yearly over-priced umbrellas, only to lose them almost immediately. I love sitting in my room and listening to the rain come down on my windows. I love walking all the way up from Main Street and Hastings in the rain to go to 49th Parallel and Lucky’s Donuts to get a coffee and a donut and a brief reprieve from the weather. I just friggen love my city when it rains. And although I might be one of the few who do, my relationship with my city when it rains makes me feel like I’m in some sort of exclusive club… like a club that I’m the only member of. Until you find that other weirdo who loves the rain and you realize that you can make a friend while sitting in a weather pattern caused by the ocean kissing the mountains… at which point you realize that the beauty people wait for in the summer is what creates your love for the city all year round. That’s some magic shit right there.
Who are some artists you think we should be paying more attention to?
My friend Alexandria Maillot always blows me away with her voice and artistry. Her songwriting is gorgeous, yet intense a chalk-full of storytelling you need to hear. I’m excited to share the stage with her May 10th at The Hideout for the Music Heals party/showcase! This year will be Lovecoast’s first year at CMW, which absolutely shocks me. They have a massive following out here on the West Coast and for good reason. Their feel-good tunes and beachy vibes make for one awesome party. My other friend Luca Fogale is an act not to miss. His on-stage intimacy and voice draws you in and makes you feel like you’re in front of a fireplace with your favourite throw blanket. He’s also an incredibly important member of the West Coast music scene, as he produces and writes with many up-and-coming acts. He’s an artistic shapeshifter. All of these acts are unstoppable and I’m lucky to call them all my friends. You can see them all perform this year at CMW!
What were the best and worst purchases you’ve made recently?
At this rate, if my money isn’t going into my music I feel like everything is a bad purchase. So in saying this, I think my best purchase lately would have to be my Corkcicle stainless-steel straws. SINGER HACK: many vocalists know that the best way to warm up your voice is to hum through straws. And as cities around the world start to ban the use of plastic straws, I felt it was my due diligence to reduce my waste. Also you get two in a 7$ package, so I have one in my gear bag and one for at home. Game changer! You can buy them here:
My worst purchase(s) would have to be the 5 different highlighters (make-up) I bought AND returned because my skin is essentially the equivalent of parchment paper. I’m sorry Sephora.
Claire Hunter – Toronto, ON
