If you have been looking for the Canadian answer to Tame Impala, dusted with a flavor of Leon Bridges, keep your ear to the ground for Mawzy – a moniker for Newfoundland ex-pat multi-instrumentalist Matt Cooke. The project lends its name from local Newfoundland slang for a mild, muggy day, but sonically borrows more from 60’s psych rock and soul, melding in modern indie sensibilities to create an ambient and diverse sound. Mawzy’s layered Junos, and Leslie driven guitars are the product of co-production with engineer Greg G (July Talk, LBO), and fellow NL musician heavyweights Josh Banfield (RePartee, Iskwe) and Nick Clarke (Fortunate Ones, Adyn Townes). Dreamy visuals complete the aesthetic and are unmistakably Mawzy.
