Cecilia Villar Eljuri is a revered storyteller and genre fuser. She is a leading Latina artivist living in NYC who tours internationally with her stellar band sharing her music and message of empowerment. Songwriting is her passion. Performing is her gift.
Touted as one of the top Latina electric guitar players in the world, Eljuri navigates through the musical landscapes of her Ecuadorian, Spanish and Lebanese heritage all presented with an elegant and socially conscious voice.
As a musical activist for Immigrant and Women’s Rights, Eljuri has her guitar strings and voice on the pulse of some of the most timely issues that echo through our communities. Audiences engage with her memorable bilingual message of protest and universal truths expressed in her award-winning songs and videos.
Eljuri’s musical vernacular draws from the tangos and pasillos that her mother composed, the cha-cha-cha she danced to with her father, the records she borrowed from her older siblings, and to NYC’s Lower East Side clubs like CBGBs where she played with her first bands.
“Eljuri punctuates her clever, metaphorically-charged Spanish-language lyrics with intense, dynamic, often exhilarating lead guitar work – she’s sort of this era’s David Gilmour of Rock en Español.” –NEW YORK MUSIC DAILY
Her current album ‘La Lucha’ has been featured on PRI, NPR, Voice of America and in the Top Ten on !earshot and Worldbeat Canada.
Eljuri will perform as a power trio presented by Futuro Libre + Lula Music & Arts Centre
