Intertwining classic melodies of Country Music with the intimate familiarity and euphonic vocals of Folk and Americana, Port Hope, Ontario’s Nickola Magnolia sings songs of change and longing, death, loss and heartbreak, and hope and belonging from the shores of the Great Lakes. Her themes are timeless, and her insights unique and powerful, shaped by her singular experience.
Her debut record “Broken Lonesome,” produced by The Sheepdogs’ Jimmy Bowskills, featuring members of the Bahamas, and Kathleen Edwards’ band was released in 2022. The record takes the listener on a journey through crises of addiction and disillusionment; to a place where truth is critical to self-preservation. Reviews of the record praise it’s “timeless musicianship,” Magnolia’s “stunning vocal performance, soulful passionate vocals,” and her “thoughtful intimate songwriting.”
Live shows gather similar accolades, with reviewers noting her “vulnerable yet independent, sobering yet intoxicating, personal yet universal,” and “singularly powerful” performances. In the past year, Nickola has opened for July Talk, Ingred Andress, Keith Urban, and Jack White via LiveNation’s Corona Stage in Toronto, Ontario. In addition, she currently plays a weekly Sunday evening residency at Toronto’s Wheat Sheaf Tavern.
