From Cradle to Stage
Virginia Hanlon Grohl grew up in the 50’s in Ohio and graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a degree in English and Education. After brief stops in Georgia and Germany she and her husband James Harper Grohl settled in Northern Virginia where she raised (pre and post divorce) her two children, Lisa and David. When her thirty-year teaching career ended in the mid 90’s she became a frequent backstage observer of current rock bands while her son was touring with Nirvana, Them Crooked Vultures and the Foo Fighters. Her own early musical ventures in community theatre musicals and The Three Belles, a 50’s trio she writes about, did not compare to the rock star life she now found exciting. Yet her search for other mothers behind all those curtains was unsuccessful until she set out on a meet-the-mothers journey in 2013. Three countries and nine states later she wrote about the 19 mothers she met. The conversations touched on the joys, conflicts, set-backs and surges to success of their famous sons and daughters as well as the mothers’ own histories. Accompanied by Ms. Grohl’s own vignettes, personal stories and memories of music and motherhood, the profiles she gathered became a book, her first, From Cradle to Stage.
