Rich Castillo

Universal Music Canada
Toronto, ON, Canada
Originating from Nottingham in the UK, Rich Castillo got his break into the music business on 2004 when he was dropped from his record label as a band member in RnB pop group.

Rich joined Shalit Global management as an assistant. Starting off as an intern, he spent 2 years covering for artist managers in the company at events and doing all the jobs no one else wanted to do. He then worked as a management assistant to multi Brit nominated Big Brovaz and Jamelia.

In 2007 he found the band N-Dubz and started working the whole project at a very early stage. They went from doing shows in front of rooms of 30 to 40 people to selling out arenas such as the O2 arena, London, (20k in) in 2011. During that time I had 15 hit singles, 3 hit albums, 4 mobo awards and a Brit nomination. He oversaw all aspects of management for this period including touring, publishing, merchandise & A&R for Shalit Global Management.

Rich later signed N-Dubz to Def Jam under LA Reid and Max Gousse. He spent most of that year in the states making the last Ndubz album with Jean Baptiste, The Dream, Toby Gadd, Salaam Remi, Jim Jonsin & Rico Love.

In 2012 he joined Universal as a full time A&R and signed Solo projects for Tulisa & Dappy. He had a number 1 with Dappy’s debut single “No Regrets”( over 400k sold) and a number 2 with his follow up, "Rockstar" (over 250k sold), featuring Brian May from Queen. He had a top 10 (No.6) album later on that year. In the same year I had a number 1 hit with Tulisa’s single “Young”. Tulisa was an Xfactor judge at the time.

He then signed Charlie Brown and had a big radio hit with “On My Way” (UK number 7) which was used on America’s got talent. (160k)

He then A&R’d the Stephen Lawrence O2 arena concert album that consisted of live tribute recordings by the following artist – Emeli Sande, Jessie J, Ed Sheeran, Rita Ora, Ellie Goulding & Labrinth. This was a live concert that he turned around to master and mix within 24 hours with full management approvals.

After being asked by the head of Universal Music UK David Joseph, if he’d be interested in moving his family to Canada to join the Universal team. He did his research and met with Randy Lennox.

As of August 1st 2014 he became A&R Director for Universal Music Canada where he joined Randy Lennox’s team to sign new artist to the Canadian side of Universal records.

In 2015 he signed Lucas DiPasquale for the world to Universal Canada and has been steadily developing him. He also signed Bit Funk’s “Off the Ground” Single that’s been a radio top 20 airplay single. Both Lucas Dipasquale and Rainer & Grimm were added to Spotify’s Spotlight program that focusses on pushing key Canadian artist that they think will have a big year.

His key areas of the business are music management, publishing and primarily A&R.
