Ian Swain

Researcher & Consultant,
Ian is animated by two central questions: what makes local and regional development happen? And: how are cultural clusters nurtured? Ten years in public policy and research have given him a deep understanding of both questions. He pairs expert knowledge of urban economics and creative industries with the ability to make complex ideas clearer for broad audiences.

Following graduate studies at the University of Toronto, Ian went to work for one of his professors at the Rotman School of Management: Richard Florida. There, he managed research projects on music and the entertainment economy, drafted papers, and created visualizations and maps. He has used quantitative and qualitative methods to study and compare music scenes in Canada, the US and Europe.

As part of his recent work as a consultant to cities, cultural institutions and companies, Ian collaborated with Andrew Vincent on the Connecting Ottawa Music project.
