Rob Braide

National Music Centre

An active participant in the private radio sector for over thirty (30) years and recently the artist management and label areas, Rob has always been a strong supporter of the Canadian music industry. His radio career has brought him into contact with all aspects of the music business and he has cultivated relationships between broadcasters and the music industry for many years. In his previous capacity of Vice President, Branding, Communications and Industry Relations at Astral Media Radio, Rob was instrumental in the elaboration of a highly innovative tangible benefits program focused on emerging talent. In his present role as the Vice President, Content and Regulatory Affairs at Stingray Digital, Rob uses his passion for music to launch dynamic new ideas ideally suited to the growing digital world.

Rob’s career has been dedicated to radio and music; he has wanted to be in radio since hearing Dave Boxer play The Beatles on CFOX for the first time in 1964. As a younger man, Rob spent five (5) years at Carleton University studying electronic and computer composition at Carleton University’s Faculty of Music; the fact that Carleton had a great campus radio station which required active student participation and support was the driving factor behind his decision to attend Carleton. Ultimately, Rob’s passion for radio culminated with his involvement, along with a team of dedicated volunteers, in the launching of Canada’s first student commercial radio station, CKCU-FM (Radio Carleton).

An all Night show at Montreal’s CHOM Fm made him throw his Master’s thesis over his shoulder and run away to join the circus. Ten years as a DJ, Music and Program Director at CHOM and for at time at CKGM as well, and he was ready for a change.

In 1987, broadcasting icon Gary Slaight asked him to take over the General Manager position of the Montreal-based Standard Radio stations: CJAD and MIX 96 (and eventually, CHOM in 2002); Rob acted as Vice President and General Manager of these stations for over twenty (20) years. Later, upon the acquisition of Standard Radio by Astral Media Radio, Rob also acted as Vice President, Branding, Communications and Industry Relations for Astral Media Radio. In January 2009, in addition to acting in a senior consultancy position with Astral Media Radio, Rob founded Braide Media Inc., a full service multi-media consulting firm, joining Stingray Digital in 2011.

A proud Montrealer, Rob has been involved at the board of director level of many community and para-municipal organizations, including

• the Montreal Board of Trade;
• Le Palais des Congrès;
• The Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Performing Arts; and
• St. Mary’s Hospital.

Over his illustrious career, Rob has sat on the boards of directors of many organizations, including the Montreal Children’s Hospital and Musicaction, and acted as Chairperson of the YMCA’s Kamp Kanawana Capital Campaign and the Canadian Association of Broadcasters (CAB). Currently, Rob is the immediate past Chairperson of The Radio Starmaker Fund, an organization that funds established Canadian musicians with funding collected from the tangible benefits arising from acquisitions by major Canadian radio broadcasters.

In 2010, he was inducted into both the Canadian Association of Broadcaster’s Hall of Fame and the Canadian Music and Broadcasting Hall of Fame.
