Stella Donnelly, Tones And I win big at 2020 AIR Awards

Independent artists were front and centre at the 2020 AIR Awards which returned to Adelaide overnight.

The ceremony took place at The Lion Artist Factory, and was broadcast for the whole country to see on AIR’s YouTube channel.

The big winners on the night were Stella Donnelly who was recognised for her album Beware Of The Dogs (Independent Album of the Year & Best Independent Pop Album) and Tones And I who won the gong for Breakthrough Artist presented by PPCA and Song of the Year for ‘Dance Monkey’.

ABC Music was awarded the coveted title of Best Independent Label, taking home a digital marketing package valued at $10,000 to help showcase their talent to the music public.

Creator of Isol-Aid festival, Emily Ulman, took out the 2020 Outstanding Achievement Award sponsored by Merlin for her work supporting artists during COVID-19 via the socially-distanced Instagram festival.

In total, 18 awards were given out, including four new categories for the very first time.

Other recipients included Sampa The Great, Dom Dolla, The Jungle Giants, DZ Deathrays, Julia Jacklin, Northlane, Angie McMahon and more.

“We congratulate all the nominees and award recipients and are grateful for the ongoing support we have received from the South Australian Government and our supporting partners,” AIR CEO Maria Amato.

“We look forward to celebrating the success of the Australian independent music sector in Adelaide again next year!”

The 2020 AIR Awards saw performances by artists including Donnelly, The Teskey Brothers, McMahon and the Soul Movers, while Dylan Lewis was master of ceremonies.

Jessica Brathwaite acted as host while presenters included Murray Cook and Fanny Lumsden.

“Congratulations to all the winners and finalists of the 2020 AIR Awards which celebrate the outstanding and inspiring talent of Australia’s independent artists across multiple genres,” Minister for Innovation and Skills David Pisoni said.
