    Canadian Music Week is pleased to welcome the following industry members to the

    CMW 2020 Co-Chair Committee

    Gil Moore
    Owner/Founder
    Metalworks Studios

    Gil Moore is a Mississauga based musician who has been active in the Canadian music industry for over 40 years. Gil is a founding member of Triumph, one of Canada’s most celebrated music groups. Additionally, Gil is the CEO and Founder of Mississauga’s Metalworks Studios, Metalworks Institute, and Metalworks Production Group. Triumph’s concerts were renowned for their fiery brand of excellent musicianship combined with a larger than life stage spectacle, taking their Canadian brand of rock ‘n roll to the largest concert stages across North America and beyond. Triumph’s fourteen albums have received 25 Gold and Platinum certifications from Music Canada and RIAA in Canada and the United States respectively. Triumph were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame (2008), the Q107 Toronto Music Hall of Fame (1997), the Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Hall of Fame (2007), Mississauga’s Legends Row (2012), and Canada’s Walk of Fame (2019). The City of Mississauga named a new street in honor of the band; ‘Triumph Lane’ was christened by Mayor Hazel McCallion, Councilor Sue McFadden, Police Chief Michael Metcalfe, and the Peel Police Pipes & Drums (2011). Recently Triumph were presented with the 2019 Legends of Live Award at the Canadian Music Week conference. In 2011, Triumph’s music and business archives were donated to the University of Toronto Libraries – Media Commons where they are available as research resources to U of T students. Gil was honored with the ‘Business and the Arts Award’ from the Mississauga Board of Trade in recognition of his ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Arts Community of Mississauga’ (2002). He was inducted into the Mississauga Music Walk of Fame (2012) for his contributions in music education and community involvement. As Metalworks’ founder Gil received the Ontario Chamber of Commerce ‘Ontario Business Achievement SME Excellence Award’ (2013), and the ‘Sam McCallion Community Involvement Award’ (2014). Gil is a recipient of the Mississauga Arts Council ‘Laurie Pallett Patron of the Arts MARTY Award’ (2015), the Mississauga Board of Trade ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ (2016), Heritage Mississauga’s ‘President’s Award’ (2019), and Music Canada’s ‘Artist Advocate Award’ (2019). Metalworks Studios are Canada’s most celebrated music studios with nearly 200 gold and platinum Music Canada and RIAA awards. Recently, Metalworks Studios won the Canadian Music Week CMW “Recording Studio of the Year” award (2019) for an unprecedented17th time, a record that will likely never be broken. Launched by the studio, Metalworks Institute was a natural extension into education in the arts. The school now has over 250 full time students enrolled. Metalworks Production Group extended the studio’s services into the live event field, setting the stage sound and lighting for concerts and events throughout the province and sponsoring many community events in Mississauga. Gil has served as an Executive Board Member of the Toronto Musicians Association Local 149, as well as Board Member and First Vice President of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS). Currently, he serves as a board member for the Canadian Association for the Advancement of Music and the Arts (CAAMA).

     

    Helen Murphy
    CEO
    Anthem Entertainment
    Helen has dedicated much of her career to leading media and entertainment companies through the changes that reshape or even redefine their industries. She brings to Anthem Entertainment the insights of a veteran executive who has always embraced innovation to help artists explore new ways to work, share and create. Recognizing the long- reaching effects that the digital revolution would have on entertainment, Helen founded International Media Services Inc. (IMS) in 2004, which offers strategic and financial guidance to organizations including Comcast Spectacor, EMI Music, Lionel Richie, Live Nation, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, Sony Corporation of America and Ticketmaster, among many others. Her success has been grounded in empathy for creators and an understanding of the challenges they face. Before founding IMS, Helen served as Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Warner Music Group (WMG), where she played a pivotal part in Time Warner’s sale of the company, as well as Chief Financial and Administrative Officer for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, where she led their highly successful initial public offering. Prior roles also include Chief Financial Officer of Westvaco Corporation and Chief Financial Officer of Polygram Holding, where she helped rejuvenate the company’s finances and support its acquisition by The Seagram Company. A Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Helen has taught corporate finance and financial management at the University of Guelph in Canada. She received an Honors Bachelor of Arts in Quantitative Economics from the University of Guelph and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Western Ontario, playing Varsity Basketball at both schools. While her experience makes her an effective leader, Helen’s passion is creative collaboration: in 2018, she produced the biographical documentary films Icon: Jose Feliciano and Ice Ice Baby: Hip Hop’s First Global #1. As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, Helen will continue to put creators first.
     

     Iain Taylor
    President/CEO
    Cadence Music Group

    Iain Taylor began his career at indie label, Electric Distribution, as Ontario Sales Manager where he helped launch NWA, and Nine Inch Nails in Canada. This led to joining Universal Music Canada where he worked for 20 years in a variety of positions, ultimately as Vice President, Sales & Marketing. Iain joined Maple Music Recordings in 2015 as President & CEO, where he restructured the company and rebranded it as Cadence Music Group to signal the company’s focus on signing and developing artists on a global level. Cadence is home to 5 labels (Open Road Recordings, Physical Presents, Pheromone Recordings, Cadence Recordings and Known Accomplice) as well as its distribution company, Fontana North, which represents over 100 independent Canadian and international labels and artists. 

     

    Jackie Dean
    Chief Operating Officer
    Music Canada

    After receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Wilfrid Laurier University Jackie Dean began her career with Ontario Hydro in Finance where she furthered her studies to obtain a CPA designation. Having accepted a senior role with KPMG after obtaining her CPA, she quickly moved to advise in the Enterprise Practice on issues related to organizational structures and corporate tax planning.  With a passion for empowering others, Jackie has also shared her wealth of knowledge and expertise as a lecturer at Wilfrid Laurier University, teaching second-year core business classes. 

    Jackie currently holds the position of Chief Operating Officer at Music Canada and over the past 17 years, has been an instrumental collaborator across the music industry. Jackie has a vision, and has been dedicated to the development of the business directions and strategies of Music Canada, The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences/The JUNO Awards, and MusiCounts. Her work has been integral in shaping what each of these organizations are today, and she continues to work tirelessly to support their mandates within the Canadian music industry. This includes promoting awareness and sharing her knowledge on the structure of the Canadian music ecosystem; the importance of music education and the role it needs to play to support previous downturns in the industry, and focusing on fair compensation for creators in the ever-changing digital age to ensure the music industry is sustainable in Canada.

     Jake Gold
    President/CEO
    The Management Trust Ltd.
    Jake Gold is one of Canada’s most successful artist managers, and for its 6 season run, a judge on the national television hit Canadian Idol. In 1981, Gold started his artist management company, The Management Trust, through which he is best known for his role in establishing and transforming The Tragically Hip into a national icon. Gold currently directs the careers of upcoming act “Common Deer”, and acclaimed pop-rock band The Pursuit of Happiness, as well as music producers Moe Berg, Laurence Currie, Dan Hosh, and Russell Broom.Gold has been recognized by the annual Canadian Music Industry Awards as Manager of the Year in 1991, 1993 and 1994. In 2009, Gold was elected to the board of CIMA (CIRPA) and recently has been elected again to Vice‐Chairman for CIMA. Jake is also a board member for the MMF (Music Managers Forum) and is the 2013 MMF Honour Roll Award recipient for his lifetime work in the field of Artist Management. He also sits on the music advisory board of the OMDC.

     

    Kwende Kefentse
    Cultural Industries Development
    City of Ottawa

    Kwende Kefentse is the Cultural Industries Development Officer for the City of Ottawa. Prior to completing a Masters of Research from UCL’s Bartlett School Architecture in Space Syntax Architecture and Cities (2017-2018) focussed on the spatial configuration of music industry value chains, Kwende played a leading role developing the council-approved Renewed Action Plan for Arts, Heritage and Culture (2013-2018). Following that, he led the development of the Ottawa Music Industry Coalition – a not-for-profit organization focussed on industry development, and the Ottawa Music Strategy (2018-2020) – a council-approved strategy for investing in, and developing the music industry. He now works on day-to-day implementation of the strategy while developing other cultural industry initiatives. He serves on the board of the Carlton University Art Gallery and FACTOR (Diversity and Inclusion observer) respectively. Kwende is also the locally and internationally renowned producer and performer DJ Memetic, and the host + creative director of TIMEKODE, one of Canada’s most established independent dance parties. Over nearly 15 years of monthly events TIMEKODE has become a beacon of progressive pluralism in Ottawa, and a launching pad from Ottawa to the world.  

     

     

     

    Lisa Logutenkow
    VP, Canada
    The Orchard

    Lisa Logutenkow began working with Bedlam Management in 2005 following six years as a tour manager. Less than two years later she took over operations of Dine Alone Records and Bedlam Management, expanding the label’s roster domestically and globally attracting Grammy and JUNO Award-winning talent, including critically acclaimed artists such as Bedouin Soundclash, City and Colour, Alexisonfire, Arkells and many more. Lisa recently decided to further to expand her knowledge of the industry by accepting the role of Vice President of The Orchard’s Canadian office where she focuses on helping Indie labels, artists and managers grow their business, brands and respective artists.

     

     

     Lisa Zbitnew
    Owner/Operator
    The Phoenix

    Lisa Zbitnew holds the distinction of becoming both the youngest President and the first woman to lead a major music company in Canada, and was the youngest recipient to receive the “Music Executive of The Year” honour from the Canadian Music Industry Awards.She is recognized not only for her work as a long time label head, but for her contributions in the not for profit world, including as CEO of War Child North America.Over the past decade, Lisa has focused her passion on live music.  She is the co-owner/operator of the legendary Phoenix Concert Theatre, a landmark venue in the City of Toronto.    Most recently, she and her partners reopened the Bronson Centre Music Theatre in Ottawa, a fully renovated 1000 capacity live music venue, which also serves as a social enterprise.  The venue supports the over 40 charities within the Bronson Centre property, allowing them to operate at below market, affordable rent.

     

     

     

     

    Margaret Mcguffin
    Executive Director
    Music Publishers Canada

    Margaret McGuffin is the Executive Director of the Canadian Music Publishers Association.Previously, Margaret has held management positions with the Canadian Musical Reproduction Rights Agency , Musicians’ Rights Organizations Canada and Access Copyright and has served on the Board of Directors for Re:Sound and the Canadian Private Copying Collective. She started her career at Music Canada and Connect Music Licensing and later worked as a consultant with a wide range of cultural organizations and collective management organizations including the JUNOS.  Margaret holds a BA from the University of Western Ontario and an MBA in Arts and Media Administration from York University’s Schulich School of Business.   Margaret volunteers extensively and currently is Vice Chair on the Board of Directors of Work in Culture and the Advisory Board of MusiCounts.

     

    Paola Palazzo
    VP, Talent

    Paola served as Vice President of Entertainment Industry Relations and Event Development at Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment, and is now the Vice President of Talent at Live Nation Canada. With over 25 years of music experience, Paola has also served as Vice President of Booking for The Forum in Los Angles, Vice President of Talent and Booking for Nederlander Concerts, Senior Talent Buyer at House of Blues Concerts and a Music Agent at Creative Artists Agency.Paola has received numerous accolades throughout her career, including the “Music Business Achievement Award” at the Hamilton Music Awards, a nomination for Pollstar’s “Talent Buyer of the Year,” and has been recognized in Billboard Magazine’s “Women in Music.”

     

    Susan Marjetti
    Executive Director
    CBC Radio and Audio

    Susan Marjetti is the Executive Director of CBC Radio and Audio. She has been in the role since 2015.CBC Radio and Audio is CBC Music, CBC Talk, CBC Podcasts and most recently the new CBC Listen which is a consolidated digital audio offer that includes all of CBC’s audio content from music playlists to podcasts.Susan has spent nearly 4 decades working in radio stations large and small in various parts of Canada.Before taking the reins at the network she managed CBC Toronto and the Ontario region where Susan and her team worked to make the public broadcaster more relevant to a changing city and province.Susan’s leadership in diversity and inclusion has been recognized numerous times and includes a Harry Jerome Award, Ryerson’s Wall of Fame, and the Rosalie Award.

    Adam Countryman
    Agent
    Paradigm Talent Agency
     

    Adam Countryman is a veteran agent with more than a decade of experience in the concert business. He has been influential in the careers of artists such as Arkells, A Tribe Called Red, Half Moon Run and Andy Shauf among many others. He began his career in 2004 at The Agency Group, which was later acquired by UTA in 2015. In 2017 he joined two other agents, Rob Zifarelli and Andre Guérette, in opening up the first Paradigm Talent Agency office based in Toronto, Canada.

    Outside of his duties as a talent booking agent, Adam developed a course for Ryerson University in Live Touring and Concert Event Management. This was the first course of its kind at an established Canadian University. Adam is also the co-chair of the Alternative category committee at the JUNO Awards and volunteers regularly with the CARAS organization.

    Now in its 38th year, Canadian Music Week is Canada’s leading annual entertainment event dedicated to the expression and growth of the country’s music, media and entertainment industries. Combining multifaceted information-intensive conferences; a trade exposition; awards shows and the nation’s largest new music festival which spans 5 nights of performances (May 19 – 23), with hundreds of showcasing bands at more than 40 live music venues in downtown Toronto. All conference functions take place at the Sheraton Centre Toronto Hotel, 123 Queen Street W. Toronto (May 20 – 22).
