Cross-Border Win-Wins: How Canada and the US Can Work Together to Support the Music Industry

As Canada and the US negotiate NAFTA modernization, Canada undertakes its Five Year Copyright Review and the United States considers theMusic Modernization Act, it’s worth considering how our governments can work together to support their music industries. At least two “Win-Wins” point the way to cooperative music policies that put creators first: 1) non-discriminatory eligibility for royalties; and 2) full rights for pre-1972 recordings. Unfortunately, current policies are more often the result of Tit-for-Tat – with creators as cannon fodder. How do we move our governments from Tit-for-Tat to Win-Win? A cross border panel of experts will show how both the US and Canada can come out ahead by putting creators first.
