Music Cities Summit: Workshop

Hustling Smarter: How Cities and Artists Win Together and Foster Culture, Commerce, and Community

We all know the basics of today's gig economy - stringing together as many paid hustles as possible to make enough money to survive. From taking shifts at bars and coffee shops, to driving for ride-sharing companies, working in the service industry, to taking desk jobs outside of their artistic field, this dynamic has been directly connected to the realities of professional musicians for as long as we can remember.

The good news is that this dynamic is evolving - because artists and their cities are getting savvier about how to collaborate. Cities are beginning to understand the cultural risk of losing their musicians to less expensive housing markets. In response, community leaders on the forefront of truly creative economies are finding ways to make the lives of their local musicians a little bit easier with licensing opportunities, trade delegations, artist housing, medical and dental services, preferred parking, and other innovative practices. And many artists are beginning to realize that their value extends beyond the stage and studio, and that their expertise has a place in urban planning, education, environmental awareness, and city building.

This thinking is still very new, and has tremendous opportunity to take hold on a national level - with the right support. That's where you come in. By participating in this workshop, you'll hear first-hand experiences from Minneapolis-based rapper, essayist, speaker, and member of the Doomtree rap collective, Dessa, about the challenges and opportunities in this new artist economy. Then you'll join nationally recognized nonprofit leader, city builder, and artist liaison Jami Duffy for an engaging exploration for how artists and arts communities can create reciprocal relationships that benefit their cities, their artists, and the community at large. Come ready to share your challenges and walk away with some new ideas.
