Writers’ Strike are an indie rock band from Halifax, founded in 2006 by long time summer camp friends Darryl Smith (guitar, vocals), Matt Davidson (bass, vocals), and Conor Hancey (guitar, vocals). After failed experiments in high school punk bands, bedroom projects, and ambitious relocations to Glasgow, the trio decided to move to Halifax, settle in, and start a band for real. They quickly recruited Craig Koziar (drums) and Amy Bollivar (synths) and began recording the Rocket Summer EP.
The recording was a tense affair, as the diverse musical influences of songwriters Smith and Davidson were tethered together. What emerged was some sort of indie-Clash; Writers' Strike pull influences from the last fifty years on both sides of the Atlantic and squeeze them all into tight pop songs full of aplomb and immediacy. After releasing The Rocket Summer EP in the summer of 2007 the band found themselves with a following and a reputation for raucous live shows.
In 2009 the band released the Still Standing EP, followed by the Bad Time single in 2010. Later that year drummer Craig Koziar left the band to pursue other interests while Tynan Dunfield quickly took over the role. In the fall of 2011 the group released the Stay Down EP that received enthusiastic reviews from the online blog scene, and in early 2012 released a split 7” with friend Rich Aucoin. Writers’ Strike has recently completed recording their debut full-length album set to be released in early 2013.
