Eclecticism is becoming less and less of a notable quality amongst music fans. Take a look at your own iPod. Chances are you’ve got a pretty wide range of music on there - Rihanna’s latest single, a few choice Led Zeppelin tunes, the latest Clipse mixtape, and maybe even a mash-up of all three kicking around. Everyone’s a music expert, and everyone’s playlists are equally diverse. What happens when the current generation of listeners, free from the shackles of genre typecasting, start their own bands?
Toronto’s Vibonics are the answer to this question. Fusing elements of hip-hop and R&B with indie rock and funk, the six-piece band blends a range of styles seamlessly into their signature flow, captured perfectly on their debut EP. Ironically enough, as natural and organic as the group’s sound is, it all started as an unlikely school project between emcee Crossword and guitarist Alfred Chow.
“Alfred and I met at school, and one of the projects we had to do was to write a song,” recalls Crossword. “It came together in a way that worked better than we expected, so we continued writing.”
“If you asked me six years ago if I’d be playing in a hip hop band, I’d say no way,” adds Chow, speaking to the surprising chemistry between not only Vibonics’ members, but the synergy between the disparate influences they incorporate into their music. “It just worked. We were patient and put the right line up together. I grew up playing rock, funk, metal and jazz, so writing this EP with a solid membership enabled us to do this.”
A major addition to the group was singer Tacha, who brings not only her soulful croon to the mix, but rapping skills that provide a feminine foil to Crossword’s streetwise slang.
“Tacha changed our dynamic,” says Crossword. “There is a lot of male perspective in hip hop. The disparity between males and females in hip hop is huge. Giving a female voice to our songs is one thing, but then also having her spit a verse is a big deal. You have this dichotomy in the song writing keeping a balance, and our interaction on stage as a result is just immense.”
The self-titled EP moves in many different directions, from the grandiose opener “Major,” which was made to be played in every car on every summer afternoon, to the more tense vibe of “Nervous,” a love song that encapsulates the male/female dichotomy between Crossword and Tacha.
“We wanted to show people what we’re capable of, and within these four tracks, we wanted to give people a wide range of who we are at that time and who we are as a band,” states Crossword of the EP. “Someone told me my voice sounds different on each song, and we are coming from different angles on each song. We’re maintaining our authenticity and our originality but at the same time showing people what we’re about.”
Though Vibonics are brazenly moving past whatever limitations may be placed on bands, they still humbly acknowledge those that came before them, progressing while at the same time paying homage to their influences, rather than simply pilfering the greats.
“We are constantly finding new sounds and finding original ways to bend the genres” adds Chow. “A song like ‘Palm Trees’ may appeal more to a rock music fan, and hip hop fans would be more into songs with constant rapping without a real hook. We try to appeal to everyone, but really we just want to get the best song out of ourselves, and we want to be honest and just play what we feel is true to ourselves.”
That enthusiasm for the sheer love of playing music comes through at their live shows; a sweaty, interactive experience that Chow insists leaves him “sweating his ass off” after the band exits the stage. The response from crowds seems to be growing, but it doesn’t faze the band one bit. For Vibonics, it’s all about the music, the way it should be.
“People want to see a kick-ass show and that’s what we’re going to give them,” boasts Crossword. “At the end of the day, we want to please ourselves first. We love music and that’s all it’s about for us.”
“We just love doing it,” Chow puts it simply. “Just from being on stage and playing together, we’ve become a little family. I have so much fun doing it and i know everyone around me has just as much fun as I do. We can’t really ask for more at this point.”
