Andre Papanicolaou is a Montreal-based singer/songwriter and touring and session guitarist. For the better part of a decade, he has focused more on the latter, but over the past year and a half, has also been quietly yet steadfastly writing, recording, arranging, and producing a collection of songs that have inadvertently served as a kind of witness to some more personal thoughts, reflections and meditations on his own life. It was while on this journey that all the lyrics and music to what would become his fist solo album, Into the Woods, Out of the Woods, came to be.
Over several years of recording and touring with other artists (Vincent Vallières, Daran, Pascale Picard Band, M.Mono), Papanicolaou began to carry around a notebook and write down a series of essays, unfinished lyrics, and random ideas. This notebook would later be revisited in late 2011 and from a mess of scribbles and doodles, a collection of promising songs emerged.
A series of co-conspirators would be called in to help assemble these embryonic ideas into proper recordings: Simon Blouin on drums, Guillaume Chartrain on Bass, Joss Tellier and Guillaume Doiron on Guitars, and François Richard on Piano, and keys. Ghyslain-Luc Lavigne was called in to make the whole thing listenable and pretty soon, a record emerged.
Infused with rich folk arrangements and reverb-drenched electric guitars, Papanicolaou’s voice acts as a glue, keeping all the elements in their place as he confesses and laments, mostly in the first person, of a life that can sometimes swerve from joy to sorrow, hope to fear, light to dark. Sometimes, you need to enter the woods, before you can find a way out of them.
In January 2013, Into the Woods, Out of the Woods will be released on the label Spectra Musique. Andre Papanicolaou, who has spent the better part of the last decade at stage-right, will now be tasked with moving slightly more to the center, and present his most personal work to date.
