Mr. Block started a successful independent record company in 1982 while attending the Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University. That year, he directed his first music video and produced his first record at Bob Marley’s legendary Tuff Gong Studios in Jamaica. He then headed west to direct and produce music videos, television and film properties in Los Angeles. In 1985 he formed Studio “B” Productions with Fred Berry who played the character of “Re-Run” on ABC’s hit comedy sitcom “What’s Happening!!” Block and Berry produced sitcom pilots, documentary films and co-wrote television shows.
In 1987, he joined AGF Entertainment, Inc, as a Vice President, where he managed artists, (Suzanne Vega, Shawn Colvin, Eric Anderson), directed music videos and documentaries, oversaw publishing catalogs and recording productions and began producing live events and tours worldwide. Three years later Block founded Guerilla Productions, Inc., which produced one of the largest film and audio catalogs of early 90's live music in New York City.
At Guerilla, he produced and directed commercials, documentaries and music videos - one of which won a nationwide AFI/Sony award. He also partnered with The Mitsui Corporation of Japan in the development of a 24-hour music television network and other music-themed television properties.
During that same period, he launched Major Music/Major Productions, a music management and film/television production company with offices and production studios in Los Angeles and New York. Major established a reputation for producing innovative music videos and television/film properties, introduced several cutting-edge artists, established worldwide fan bases and significant revenue streams for a number of artists (G. Love & Special Sauce, Fun Lovin’ Criminals, The JB Horns) and produced thousands of successful live and televised events worldwide. In 2000, Major added website development, digital content creation and digital distribution to its offering; mobile and social marketing followed in 2004.
In 2005, Block started developing H2oCloud, a mobile operating system; founded Major Hana Records, a record label based in Hawaii and wrote, directed, produced and financed the independent feature film, “Major Hana” in London. In 2006 he executive produced the documentary film, “Sounds of ‘Ohana” in Hawaii. In 2009, he joined Adva Mobile, a music industry mobile marketing/sales company, as Partner/VP-Business Development. Adva has launched over 1600 band and brand mobile sites. In 2012 Block founded TheHub.fm, a mobile company revolutionizing the sale of music merchandise.
He is active in film and television music supervision, mentoring entrepreneurs throughout the US, high school music students in Hawaii and preserving historic sites on Nantucket Island, MA.
