To the digitally-minded, we don’t have listeners anymore, we have “friends” and “followers.” But if radio is to transition into a digital future, is everything old-school to be deleted? With a record reach of 93%, traditional radio must be doing something right. Could it be because of what got us to “the show” in the first place, content? What strategies from traditional radio will be valuable in the transition to the online world? This session of new-economy visionaries and old school pros will try to maximize the middle ground.

JEFF WOODS INTERVIEWS NIKKI SIXX
Rock legend. Best-selling author. Photographer. Host of the syndicated radio show “Sixx Sense” and “The Side Show Countdown”. Get a backstage look into the world and mind of a rock star. Nikki Sixx will discuss his many ventures – including a new book and album, both titled “This Is Gonna Hurt” – in an exclusive interview.
Nikki Sixx is the creative force behind a multitude of projects. As the founder, bass player and songwriter for the genre-defining rock band Mötley Crüe, he led the band through an unbridled career of rock ‘n’ roll, addictions, recovery, exploits, breakups, and girls, sending their first five albums to platinum status in the process. From their debut album in 1981 (Too Fast For Love) through to 2008’s Saints of Los Angeles, Mötley Crüe have sold more than 80 million albums worldwide, emerging as one of the most influential and enduring rock acts of their era. Their ’89 release Dr. Feelgood, topped the Billboard 200 chart at Number #1, marking the band’s most successful and best-selling album to date. The new millennium saw the band issue a best-selling, tell-all biography entitled “The Dirt” - and the launch of Crüe Fest, the highest grossing summer rock tour package in 2008.
In 2007, Sixx published “The Heroin Diaries”. This haunting chronicle of addiction stayed atop the New York Times Best Seller list for more than six months and went on to sell over 350,000 copies in the US alone. In a fitting crescendo, the accompanying soundtrack by Sixx:AM - (featuring Sixx, James Michael and DJ Ashba) – sold over 300,000 copies in the U.S. and solidified the group with “Life Is Beautiful”, the most played rock track of 2008.
Sixx’s most recent venture is the syndicated radio show “Sixx Sense” and its companion weekend show “The Side Show Countdown With Nikki Sixx”, carried nightly and on the weekends, respectively, on nearly 60 rock/alternative music stations in the US and Canada. Hosted by Sixx himself and co-host Kerri Kasem, the duo provoke straight, honest talk from special celebrity guests, bands and friends and play the hottest and newest music in rock.
On April 12, 2011, Sixx will release the follow-up to “The Heroin Diaries” titled “This Is Gonna Hurt”. The book explores a new, more introspective side, the first ever public showing of his photography and insights on his life yesterday, today and tomorrow. “This Is Gonna Hurt” takes Sixx to a whole new level as an artist, musician and photographer. Accompanying the book, and slated for a May 3rd release, will be a new CD by Sixx:AM complimenting the book’s themes and showcasing the incredible songwriting and musicianship of Sixx and Sixx:AM band mates James Michael and DJ Ashba.

It’s one of the oxymorons of the age. If you can distill your band’s message to 140 characters or less, you can extend your reach a thousandfold. And Twitter is just one of a slew of social media arms and tools – including blogs and Facebook - that artists are using to promote concerts, plan tours using strategic fan traffic data and, ironically enough, extend a personal touch to an entire fanbase. How can we maximize the feedback and profitability of artist-fan “quality time?” This panel connects the dots between new digital tools and promotion, marketability, tours, merch and sales. When the bottom fell out of recorded music, the industry looked to live music to pick up the slack. But the change in focus left all involved vulnerable to the ups-and-downs of the touring business. Few would argue that understanding today’s consumer behaviour, digital culture and evolving technology landscape is critical to extracting enough value from the music business that those committed to it can still make a decent living. But in the corresponding rush to give today's music fans what they want when they want it, the lines between stakeholders have become increasingly blurred. Even with business models evolving though, effective tools for music discovery, distribution, promotion and curation remain an absolute necessity. This panel brings together a group of powerful creative minds from some of the major stakeholder groups - radio, label, management, artist - in an attempt to understand what strategies are being implemented now that will shape the sustainable music business of the future.

Today, the arsenal includes mass emails, and social networking, from fansites to blogs to Twitter and Facebook. You can carpet-bomb or you can narrowcast, according to market strategy and the nature of the audience.
Meanwhile, fans wield the power of instant gratification – from cheap ticket searches to online petitions that illuminate demand hotspots like a lantern in the dark. Our experts say this is just the beginning, and unsold concert ticket inventory suggests it still has far to go. Find out how this symbiosis is evolving and how it’s filling seats.

If the industry is doing something wrong – and let’s face it, it’s always doing something wrong – Bob Lefsetz is the one who’ll shout it out loud. The author of the e-mail newsletter, "The Lefsetz Letter" has been speaking his truth without apology for decades, alienating the powerful and intriguing the forward-thinking with out-of-the-box ideas on downloading, pricing, copyright and - most important of all - the music. - Canadian
It’s CMW’s biggest night - the annual industry celebration that puts the “vent” in event. It’s a raucous red-letter date on the industry calendar that fuels feuds, creates friendships and gives props to the pioneers and builders of our industry. It’s also been the site of some legendary musical reunions.
This year’s Broadcast Hall of Fame inductee is Bill Evanov; President of Evanov Communications Inc., who will receive the Allan Waters Lifetime Achievement Award.
Also being honoured are Bachman & Turner, inductees into the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame along with entertainment lawyer and television producer Stephen Stohn, and Sarah McLachlan, the recipient of this year’s Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award.

Summary results will be posted on-line after the conference.
Keynote:
American indie filmmaker Ellen Seidler is the co-producer/co-director of the sexy, hit lesbian romantic comedy, “And Then Came Lola” staring Ashleigh Sumner and Jill Bennett. Like so many recording artists, Seidler’s film has fallen victim to massive piracy. Her story and her one-woman campaign against those who finance large scale online theft, is an inspiration to indie artists from every genre. We’ll use Seidler’s story to kick off a discussion about how the creative community can better mobilize and fight piracy.

On the face(book) of it, college students are the ideal audience for an artist. With disposable incomes, pockets full of gadgets and a highly networked environment, it’s easy for college students to ingest music. A demographic that has broken bands for decades and launched industry careers for young promoters. But how deep is that well today – and how dependable a market, given that students are also major file-sharers? You may be surprised by how many ways collegians access music, how the demographics (more female, more minorities) have changed the listenership, and, most importantly, how huge a “campus tour” can be.

Have the (probably) unintended consequences created by the relatively recent technology paradigm shift from analogue to a seamless digital universe of recording, production, storage and distribution of music led music itself to fall from grace? At least in its recorded incarnation. In this movement from tape deck to shuffle the deck, from analogue scarcity to digital infinity: Music has itself become hyper ubiquitous but correspondingly less influential. Is the Resurrection of Vinyl telling us something really important? In all the annals of unintended consequence, will the fate of music on digital platforms be the most unintended of all: the loss of ability to move the human spirit? See the professors collide on this one.

First recording revenues took the plunge. Then, this past summer, live music let us down. That leaves the return from publishing royalties as one of the few – if not the only – truly dependable revenue streams in the new music world. For publishers, this tips the balance of power in the business, giving them the wheel in deciding the direction this industry will take. This panel of top publishing execs will outline the future and tell us where they’re steering the ship. Opportunities for growth hang in the balance.

A&R used to be simple stuff. You’d get a CD demo (an obsolete medium), plug the artist to your friends at the papers (remember them?), convince radio PDs to insert the song (yes, they used to be able to do that) and ship the product to, um, record stores. So what’s replaced all that in the A&R job description? This session examines how A&R is evolving to operate within new music platforms - both on the discovery side and the delivery side. In this day when less artists are being signed to major labels, it’s now more important than ever to develop an artist brand and connection with the fans and industry via direct means (before a label comes on board). The basics have not changed; however, it requires more noise and momentum to trigger the interest of a label these days…find out what it takes to discover and develop talent and market opportunity in today’s climate.

- Life of a Song - Anvil’s “Metal on Metal”, presented by SOCAN
-

Presented by: SOCAN
Songwriters ask the question all the time; What is a hit song worth? Depending on the genre and performance type, there are always ball park figures. But the correct answer is... it depends upon the Life of the Song. That is, songs come and go on the charts, but the good ones always find their way back, again and again. Fact of the matter is, a hit song in the 80's can come back in 2011 and be as good to you as it ever was before. Songs can have "9 Lives" and licensing them in unique and creative ways can help fund your retirement or your kid's education. This panel will focus on Anvil's classic hit; "Metal on Metal". Hear how the song was written, became a success story and how it has since been used over again through the years via covers, and placement in film, television, and advertising. More importantly, hear how much money can be made from your song that just won't go away!

An unprecedented coalition of almost 90 organizations from Canada’s arts and culture industries representing writers, performers, actors, illustrators, musicians, composers, publishers, poets, visual artists, playwrights, songwriters, and producers have signed a position statement that urges the Government to make changes to Bill C-32. Melissa Etheridge exploded onto the rock scene in the 1989 with the release of her critically-acclaimed eponymous debut album which was four times platinum in Canada. Etheridge’s popularity has been built around such memorable songs as “Bring Me Some Water” (from her debut), “No Souvenirs” (from Brave And Crazy) and “Ain’t It Heavy” (from Never Enough), for which she won her first Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal. She hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, 1993’s Yes I Am, featuring the massive hits “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought her second Best Female Rock Grammy. Celebrity Interview:
Sammy Hagar - Artist
For over 30 years, Sammy Hagar, also known as “The Red Rocker”, has been a fixture in heavy metal music. From the Montrose albums that are an essential part of the foundation of what became heavy metal, through a solo career that produced such hits as “I Can’t Drive 55?, to his decade long stint as the front man for Van Halen, Hagar has sold millions of albums all over the world.
Taking over for Van Halen’s original singer David Lee Roth in 1985, Hagar took the band to unprecedented heights, including four consecutive No. 1 albums, before being unceremoniously fired in 1996. Eight years later, he returned triumphant, leading the band on a reunion tour that was a box office smash.
Throughout his career, Hagar, a guitarist himself, has played with a succession of genius guitar players; from Ronnie Montrose and Neal Schon to Eddie Van Halen and Joe Satriani from his current group, Chickenfoot, which also features former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith. Endorsed by Gibson, the guitar company introduced a new signature Les Paul for Hagar earlier this year in celebration of his role in Chickenfoot’s success. The guitar features a look and appointments chosen by Hagar.
As a songwriter, his songs have been covered by other artists, including Bette Midler and Rick Springfield, whose 1981 Top Ten hit, “I’ve Done Everything For You,” was written by Hagar.
In addition to his legendary status among rock stars, he is the masterful entrepreneur behind the Mexican resort Cabo Wabo Cantina he founded in 1990 and home of the handmade premium Cabo Wabo tequila – the most successful new tequila brand in the liquor business in years. Hagar has since expanded his restaurant chain with Cabo Wabo Cantinas in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe and a series of airport restaurants, Sammy’s Beach Bar and Grill that raise money for local charities.
In his autobiography RED: My Uncensored Life In Rock, set for release on Saturday, March 12 through HarperCollins, Hagar tells the outrageous and unbelievable stories of his rise through rock music, detailing how his voice became instantly recognizable all over the world. Lavishing readers with behind the scenes stories from Van Halen, one of the biggest rock groups in history, Hagar tells of the global stadium tours, private jets, parties, and of course the ups and downs that came with fame and success.

- Future Hit DNA - How the digital revolution is creating hits
-
- Salon B
Through his programming and strategy stints at Yahoo! Music and CMT, Jay Frank found himself on the receiving end of input from millions of music fans. And he came to the McLuhan-esque realization that the actual nature of hit songs has changed with how we listen to them. He crystalized this startling epiphany in the industry must-read Future Hit.DNA. In this session, Jay Frank will distill some key insights from his magnum opus, changes today’s artists and producers must make to grab listeners’ attention today - including “quickie” intros, surprise key changes and many other musical strategies.
Topics will include:
-15 changes for artists wanting a chart topping hit
-Analysis of the elements to a hit song based on technology that delivers it
-A history of technology’s involvement in past hits
-How playing into new technologies can result in higher royalties

- Commerce in the Digital World: The New World of Music Licensing
-
- Salon A
The good: Licensing in a digital world has payoffs beyond many people’s comprehension – video games, indie online films and TV, downloads, streams, ringtones and ringbacks, e-greeting cards, website ads and music chips in interactive dolls. The bad: An equally complex and confounding sea of licensing and financial terms and (mis)understandings. Some are on a virtual “honor system” via voluntary agreement. For others, there’s recourse to litigation, legislation and Copyright Boards. This session has business and legal experts, as well as creators with positive and negative experiences. A must-attend for songwriters, artists, publishers and labels.

- Words & Music: The Songwriters’ Listening Session
-
- Salon A
If you’re an unknown songwriter, this is the session that breaks down the doors. What you find when you get in there will either vindicate your dream and talents, or give you a cold dose of reality. Either way, welcome to CMW’s most dramatic session. Here, ambitious tunesmiths play their demo CDs and have them evaluated by a panel of artists, experts and industry ears. Whether your dream is on the line or not, you’ll absorb incredible insights in the nuts and bolts of songwriting – song structure, lyrics, etc. – in the session and Q&A.
Songs must be submitted on audio CD* and songs will be selected at random. Please bring 4 copies of your lyrics for the panelists. Your CD and lyrics will be returned at the end of the night. A section is played for the entire group, followed by comments from the panel on the relative merits of each song from both a craft and business point of view.
*please check that the CD plays in a regular CD player.
